The Farm
Overbury Farms, owned by Penelope Bossom & managed by Jake Freestone looks after 1400Ha with soil types varying from Cotswold
Brash, through reclaimed sand and gravel land to Lias Clay. Vegetable
and cereal crops are grown and a ewe flock grazes the slopes of Bredon
Hill. A network of footpaths and bridleways provide
over 32 kms of access to beautiful farmed countryside with stunning views.
Livestock
Lambs from the 1000 strong ewe flock are raised on grass, fresh
peas in the summer and specialist fodder crops in the winter months,
in order to maintain the natural flavours of the meat. Our lamb
is produced in accordance with FABBL (Farm Assured British Beef
and Lamb) guidelines, and we are audited on a regular basis. Whole and half lamb packs can be ordered from the Estate Office as can game when
in season (Oct-Jan).
Crops for Food
Crops range from Milling Wheat and Oilseed Rape to Naked Oats,
Sugar Beet and Vegetables. Our Oats currently supply Morning Foods
and we intend to produce our own porridge oats and flour for British Food Fortnight 2005.
Conservation
As members of LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) and FWAG (Farm
Wildlife Advisory Group), our farm practices are of the highest
environmental and welfare standards. We take a very active part
in the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. Much effort and cost is put into conserving and enhancing
the features and wildlife of the area – hedgerows, ponds, stone
walls, barns etc
Education
We regularly hold school education days with the Overbury Estate to encourage an understanding of the rural economy and our responcibilities to the countryside. We hope some of Bredon Hill's Schools will take part in British Food Fortnight and Overbury Farms is keen to work with them.
British Food Fortnight
Overbury lamb, partridge, potatoes, porridge oats & flour will be available from local stores and seen in participating pub menus. During this two week period, there will
be a promotional offer for every whole lamb ordered. Customers will
receive a game voucher worth £10.
